Food for Your Mood, Your Memory and Pleasure: How What You Eat Can Support Your Brain

We often think about food in terms of energy, weight or physical health. But our diet also plays an important role in how our brain functions — including our concentration, memory, sleep and mood.
The brain is a remarkably active organ. It relies on a constant supply of nutrients to produce neurotransmitters, maintain nerve cells and support communication between different parts of the nervous system.
This doesn't mean that one particular food can make you happy or prevent illness. Rather, a balanced diet provides the building blocks your brain needs to work at its best.
Your brain and neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that allow nerve cells to communicate with one another. Some are involved in motivation and reward, while others influence sleep, attention, mood and our response to stress.
Let's look at what they do — and how your diet can provide the nutrients needed to make them.
1. Dopamine – motivation, reward and movement
What does it do?
Dopamine is involved in motivation, reward, learning, attention and movement. It is also an important part of the brain's reward system.
What does the body need to make it?
Dopamine is produced from the amino acid tyrosine, which can be made from another amino acid called phenylalanine.
Where can you find these nutrients?
Good dietary sources include:
- Eggs
- Fish and seafood
- Chicken and other lean meats
- Dairy products
- Soy and legumes
- Nuts and seeds
Pharmacy tip: Eating more of a particular food does not automatically mean your dopamine levels will increase. A varied diet containing adequate protein provides the amino acids your body needs.
2. Adrenaline – alertness and the stress response
What does it do?
Adrenaline, also called epinephrine, helps the body respond rapidly to stress or physical activity. It increases heart rate and blood flow to muscles and helps prepare the body for action.
It is technically both a hormone and a neurotransmitter.
What does the body need to make it?
Like dopamine, adrenaline is produced through a pathway that starts with tyrosine.
Where can you find tyrosine?
- Fish
- Poultry
- Eggs
- Dairy products
- Soy
- Beans and lentils
- Nuts and seeds
Regular physical activity also naturally stimulates the body's stress-response systems. Another reason movement is important for brain and overall health.
3. Acetylcholine – memory, learning and muscle function
What does it do?
Acetylcholine plays an important role in learning, memory, attention and communication between nerves and muscles.
What does the body need to make it?
One of its key building blocks is choline, an essential nutrient obtained from food. Choline is a precursor for acetylcholine as well as an important component of cell membranes.
Where can you find choline?
- Eggs particularly egg yolks
- Fish
- Meat
- Dairy products
- Soybeans
- Legumes
- Some nuts and seeds
Eggs are one of the most practical dietary sources of choline.
4. Serotonin – mood, sleep and digestion
What does it do?
Serotonin is involved in mood, sleep, appetite, digestion and the regulation of several other body functions.
A large proportion of the body's serotonin is produced in the digestive system, where it has important functions related to gut activity.
What does the body need to make it?
The body makes serotonin from the essential amino acid tryptophan. Because our bodies cannot manufacture tryptophan, we need to obtain it from food. Tryptophan is also used to produce melatonin, which helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle.
Where can you find tryptophan?

- Chicken and other poultry
- Fish
- Milk and yoghurt
- Cheese
- Soy and other legumes
- Nuts and seeds
- Oats
A balanced meal containing protein, whole grains, fruit or vegetables can provide a range of nutrients involved in serotonin production.
5. Histamine – immune defence, digestion and wakefulness
What does it do?
Histamine is probably best known for its role in allergic reactions, but it also acts as a neurotransmitter in the brain.
In the nervous system, histamine contributes to wakefulness and alertness. Elsewhere in the body, it participates in immune responses and digestive processes.
What does the body need to make it?
Histamine is produced from the amino acid histidine.
Where is histidine found?
Histidine is naturally present in protein-rich foods such as:
- Meat
- Fish
- Eggs
- Dairy products
- Soy
- Legumes
- Nuts and seeds
An important distinction
Unlike some of the other neurotransmitters discussed here, more histamine is not necessarily better.
Some foods can contain high levels of histamine, particularly foods that are fermented, aged or poorly stored. People who are sensitive to histamine may experience symptoms after consuming certain foods.
If you regularly experience flushing, headaches, itching, digestive symptoms or other reactions after eating particular foods, speak with your pharmacist or doctor rather than unnecessarily eliminating large numbers of foods from your diet.
6. Glutamate – learning, memory and brain communication
What does it do?
Glutamate is the brain's major excitatory neurotransmitter and is essential for communication between nerve cells.
It plays an important role in learning, memory and normal brain function.
Where does it come from?
Glutamate is closely connected with normal protein and amino-acid metabolism. It is naturally present in many protein-rich and plant foods.
Good sources include:
- Meat and fish
- Cheese
- Eggs
- Tomatoes
- Mushrooms
- Peas
- Broccoli
- Beans and lentils
- Nuts
- Whole grains
Glutamate is also naturally present in many foods as part of their normal protein composition.
7. GABA – the brain's calming messenger
What does it do?
GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is the brain's major inhibitory neurotransmitter.
Think of glutamate and GABA as part of a finely balanced system: glutamate generally promotes neuronal activity, while GABA helps reduce excessive neuronal activity.
GABA is involved in maintaining normal brain function and contributes to processes related to relaxation and nervous-system balance.
How is GABA made?
The body can make GABA from glutamate. This process requires an enzyme that uses the active form of vitamin B6.
Where can you find supportive nutrients?
Vitamin B6 is found in:
- Chicken and other poultry
- Fish
- Meat
- Potatoes
- Other starchy vegetables
- Bananas and other fruit
A balanced diet usually provides vitamin B6 without the need for high-dose supplementation.
So, what should you actually eat?
The good news is that you don't need seven different diets to support these neurotransmitter systems.
Many of the same foods provide several of the nutrients your brain needs.
Build your plate around:
🥚 Protein
Eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, tofu, beans and lentils provide amino acids and nutrients such as tryptophan, tyrosine, phenylalanine, histidine and choline.
🥦 Colourful vegetables and fruit
These provide vitamins, minerals, fibre and antioxidants that support overall health.
🌾 Whole grains
Oats, wholegrain bread, brown rice and other whole grains provide carbohydrates, fibre and a variety of micronutrients.
🥜 Nuts and seeds
A convenient source of protein, healthy fats and several micronutrients.
🐟 Oily fish
Salmon, sardines and mackerel provide omega-3 fatty acids, which are important components of brain cell membranes.
🥛 Dairy or suitable alternatives
Milk, yoghurt and cheese can provide protein, tryptophan and other nutrients.
Your brain needs more than food
Nutrition is only one part of maintaining a healthy brain.
Regular physical activity, adequate sleep, hydration, social connection, mental stimulation and managing stress are all important components of overall wellbeing.
And remember: there is no single "happy food" or "brain food" that can dramatically change your neurotransmitter levels overnight.
The goal is to consistently give your body the nutrients it needs through a varied and balanced diet.
